Parting Shots

Mardi Gras colors everywhere
many layers of dereliction

Here are a couple of my best shots from New Orleans. After being away from New York for two months, it’s been a bit of a culture shock slipping back into go mode. As for reflections on that strange and vibrant place, there are many. The richness of the speech might be the first that comes to mind. I overheard a man chatting with the clerk at the counter of a convenience store. In expressing a resigned “what can you do” kind of sentiment, the following words came from his mouth:

Now that Johnnie Cochran’s dead, I guess I can’t cut nobody.

He knew that the space between the words of customers and clerks was not designed for cleverness, and it was there he chuckled to himself quietly before the conversation veered in another direction. “Ain’t gonna be another Johnnie,” he said, picking up his bags, “y’all take care.”

What put you in NOLA for that period?

I go back at least once a year, but the city feels most different just because of the loss of population. Just a bit too quiet than it should be.

I had to muscle some thoughts down on paper — kind of a writing retreat. Figured I’d do it in a city where I didn’t know anyone, but would be a great place to visit. The place did not disappoint.

Good thought for location, what neighborhood did you stay in?

If you didn’t come back with a new eating, drinking, gambling or sex issue, head back for a little more time :)

I was Uptown: Napoleon and Magazine area. I’ll have to take the fifth on the addiction issue though. ;)

    Raaf!

Good to hear that you’re back in town. I am here until October 5th, at which point I move to Paris. Honestly NYC life has been too hectic / expensive for me and I feel you on the writing retreat…would love to see what you’ve been cooking up. Hit me up or send me an email and let’s get up sooooon…
