We had a little break from the norm here at Desedo HQ recently. It’s not all fun and games in the writers’ room. It just looks that way.

Iranian-Americans + Census
Comedian (and former ad man) Maz Jobrani tipped us to the fact that on the upcoming Census, Iranian-Americans are asked to mark “other” on question 9 and write in Iranian or Iranian-American. He notes that the FBI does not get these forms, but asks that you let him know if you end up getting deported so that he does not fill out his like so.

So L.A. it hurts
Sticking with our location theme here, I’ve got to give a shout out to the Sacramento Community College Players. Those being, of course, John C. Reilly, Maya Rudolph, Margaret Cho, Neil Patrick Harris et al. with a special appearance by Jack Black. Prop 8, the musical. Does it count less if all the actors are stars?
I’ve been quizzing everyone I know recently about social media and the web. The old gray lady just started including external links to blogs (among other things) on the front page, and the funniest shared video I’ve seen this week has ads popping onscreen ad infinitum. The Straight Talk Show
Some of you may remember our project from earlier this year, Hood News Network. Pilot funded by Sony, then flirted with Russell Simmons and some others. Lots of air kisses. We went back in the lab and have re-emerged with our first series – The Straight Talk Show.
John McCain has been kind enough to give us full access, and we’re providing him with a platform to tell America his plans. After the Tuesday debate, he invited Tom Brokaw over to keep on talking…

Pineapple Express, A Bromantic Comedy
The film Pineapple Express brings forth the new genre of Bromantic Comedy. How new is this term? It ain’t yet on Wikipedia.
Over the last few years, Hollywood has taken male bonding to a new level of intimacy, far more sensitive than Lethal Weapon. Entourage, Superbad, 40 Year Old Virgin and the forthcoming Bromance.– all of these are about male friendship and openly speak to the fact that Guys Have Feelings. (‘feelings’ being historically ‘unmanly/queer’) While the scripts are rife with jokes about being gay, the stories are grounded in the pursuit of punani.
Not so in Pineapple, a film in which many of the male characters are painted with unasked/unanswered question marks about their sexuality. Women are used moreso for comic relief than to reaffirm the hetero status of the characters. So if this film makes a tidy profit, I do wonder what the next step in this narrative trend will be.
